Salary and Benefits

• During the eight (8) week Training Academy, recruits do not receive a salary.
• A recruit's medical expenses, for injuries incurred during training, are paid for by the Division.
• Upon appointment as a member of the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs, members are eligible for the following benefits:
  • Health Insurance (Health care coverage is contributory in nature. A co-share of the medical premium is required for participation in coverage. Upon retirement, Department members are eligible for health insurance benefits with a required co-share equal to the premium co-share percentage applicable as of the date of retirement.)

  • Life Insurance
• Uniforms and equipment are furnished by the Division. Upon appointment, Deputy Sheriffs receive an annual clothing allowance of $800.
• The starting salary for a Deputy Sheriff upon appointment (excluding overtime and incentive pay) is $54,575 with fifteen (15) increments over twenty-five (25) years to $76,215.
• To ensure the proper performance of professional duties and obligations, the Division may direct and authorize overtime.
• There are ten (11) official State holidays per calendar year.
• The average work week consists of thirty-seven and one half (37.5) hours. Deputy Sheriffs normally work Monday through Friday (8:30 a.m.—4:30 p.m.) with an unpaid lunch break.
• Annual vacation for Deputy Sheriffs is listed below:
  • 6 months to 5 years of service = 10 working days vacation
  • 5 years to 10 years of service = 15 working days vacation
  • 10 years to 15 years of service = 18 working days vacation
  • 15 years to 20 years of service = 20 working days vacation
  • 20 years to 25 years of service = 26 working days vacation
  • 25+ years of service = 28 working days vacation
