The Academy

The Rhode Island Sheriffs Academy is located in Cranston, Rhode Island. It is an eight (8) week, unpaid academy, which runs from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Monday thru Friday. It is designed to challenge each recruit to determine if one possesses the necessary intelligence, emotional stability, physical stamina, and other criteria necessary to meet training objectives and active duty requirements.

Recruits report to the Training Academy Monday through Friday at 5:00 PM and are dismissed at 10:00 PM. The schedule consists of classes, lectures, demonstrations, and physical fitness training period each day. Attendance is mandatory for all training days.

 

Training Requirements

  • Recruits must successfully complete all academic courses.
  • After instruction on the care and use of the Division-issued service weapon, all recruits must qualify with this weapon in accordance with Rhode Island State Law.
  • Recruits must demonstrate a high level of proficiency in their physical abilities and skills.
  • A rigorous program of physical conditioning, including calisthenics, hand-to-hand combat and defensive tactics is conducted during the training process. All aspects of training must be successfully completed in order to graduate the Academy.

Recruit Regulations & Duties

  • The Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs is a paramilitary organization in which military courtesy and discipline is demanded and expected.
  • All recruits will be informed of the Division and Training Academy rules and regulations which govern member's actions during training and employment.
  • Recruits are subject to dismissal from the Academy by the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety for incompetence, poor attitude, inefficiency, failure to meet physical fitness standards, and other training objectives, or violations of rules and regulations without the action of a hearing board. Recruits must maintain proper discipline and meet attendance requirements.
  • Recruits are required to properly maintain, in accordance with the established Training Academy rules and regulations, their personal appearance, issued equipment, and personal belongings - all of which are subject to periodic inspections by the Training Academy Staff.
